Connecting Tableau

Last updated: October 8, 2024

Background

This article walks through the steps for connecting Tableau to Lumos and helps you resolve common setup issues.

Required plan & roles

There's no minimum plan required to connect the Tableau integration.

The Tableau user account you use to set up the integration must be a Site Administrator in Tableau to connect the integration.

Scopes

The Tableau integration requires you to create a Personal Access Token (PAT) in Tableau to use for the integration. The permissions of a Personal Access Token in Tableau are linked to the user that created it.

Read-only access

Today, Tableau does not provide a "view-only" permission for user management, so a Site Administrator role with read/write access to users is required to connect the integration.

Tableau Cloud instructions

If the URL you visit to access Tableau starts with https://[something].online.tableau.com, then you're using Tableau Cloud.

In Tableau

If your organization is on Tableau Cloud, you'll need to generate a Personal Access Token (PAT) to connect the integration. Tableau's official instructions for generating a PAT can be found here. Make sure to temporarily save the token name and value!

In Lumos

1. Click on the Tableau card in your Lumos integrations (Reconnect or add new).

2. Choose Tableau Cloud in the dropdown.

3. Paste your PAT token value in the Personal Access Token (PAT) field.

4. Paste your PAT token name in the PAT Name field.

5. Copy the URL of your Tableau instance, including the site name, then paste it into the Server URL (including Site Name) field. The URL should look something like https://[something].online.tableau.com/#/site/[my_company_tableau_site_name].

6. Click Connect Tableau to connect the integration.

Tableau Server instructions

Your Tableau instance needs to be on Tableau Server version 2020.1 or later to use the integration.
